Why you should use all opportunities you will get

New York City, Manhattan, Theatre District, Times Square, Broadway Ave. : " POLICE "When I was in high school I wanted to be a police officer. That was my dream. Most likely it was heavily glorified by TV shows and I had no idea of the brutal daily work of local police officers, but it was my dream job. I wanted to catch the bad guys and help the good people.

I never applied to police academy. In our country it is not easy to get in. Police academy has strict requirements for applicants.

I did read the requirements and to my disappointment I did not have physical qualifications. I was short and I had eye-glasses – but since then I have seen short officers and officers with glasses.

Even today my reasoning says that I would have never been able to get in. But I never tried, so the question is unanswered.

Never leave questions unanswered. You don’t know if you won’t try.

My second dream job was a journalist. This time I got little more far. I did actually apply to university to study journalism, but my try was badly prepared. I was serving my military service at the same time and I never read the books for entrance exams properly. The plan was just to check how it goes and then apply later on with better preparation.

Guess what. I never applied again.

Meanwhile I did get in to technical school and I am on that track ever since. I don’t regret. I have had fun and success with my selected career, but it is again one question left unanswered.

What would have happened if I would have tried my best?

When I was already on my career. Headhunter called me and offered me a job that was perfect fit for me. The company was one of the coolest IT companies at that time. It still is in my opinion.

The problem was that it would need me to move and like you guessed. I did not take the job.

..

Just recently headhunter called me and offered me a job or interview.

The job itself did not sound that interesting, but the company was super cool. This time I did decide to check how far I can go and I was interviewed few times. Everything looked good, but then something according to them, changed and they were not hiring anymore. The position was not open anymore.

I feel good. It did not leave any open questions to speculate and I got a lot of new experience. The question was answered from my side and I don’t need to come back to the question.

I don’t have regrets, but sometimes these unanswered questions come to my mind.

There is more story to tell, if you have applied to police academy, even got in and then realized that is wrong career choice for you. It is a lot better story than story where you say that it was dream that never got close to become reality. We all have those stories. Dreams that never become reality.

Don’t let opportunities or dreams pass by. Check what is there on the other end. It might that your dream turns out dull or new job or career elsewhere is not right choice, but you won’t know if you won’t try.

Most people regret things they have NOT done. Only few regret what they have done.

    Rami,
I guess we all have those unanswered questions: what would have happened IF I would have walked through THAT door of opportunity, the one that I was interested in but left closed? I know I do. But eventually, if you are persuing a life that you love, those regrets face out of view.

      Yes, it is true.

I still think you should always go as far as you can. Then there is no speculation left anymore.

      Thanks again for your comment.
